Favorite Places in Montreal

Matthew is Concordia bound!
So, my son is moving to Montreal to go to Concordia University. While this might freak some parents out, I'm totally looking forward to visiting Matthew in his new adopted home!

My friend, Frank Douma, asked for some recommendations for his trip, and here's what I came up with. This is just a start, for sure!

La Banquise
994, rue Rachel Est
Montréal, QC H2J 2J3
https://labanquise.com/en/
The first time I ate here, my (then brand new) friend, Ligia Peña, brought Jim, Chris and me to have poutine as part of our "intro to Montreal" tour. Ligia spoiled us for all other poutine.

La Fromagerie Atwater
134 Atwater Ave
Montreal, QC H3J 2J4
La Banquise Poutine
https://www.marchespublics-mtl.com/en/marchands/la-fromagerie-atwater/
Another Ligia recommendation, although it took us a few more visits to get here. I could spend hours at this cheese shop, and our cheesemonger, France (really, that was her name), was incredibly patient, packaging up kilos of cheese in a way that we could take it through customs and security at the airport.

Hand Roll at Au Pied de Cochon
Au Pied de Cochon
536 Avenue Duluth E
Montréal, QC H2L 1A9
https://aupieddecochon.ca/en/
If you want a hugely indulgent meal, go here. You must like foie gras and really rich food. I love how unpretentious this place is, and the food is really amazing.

Joe Beef
2491 Notre-Dame West
Montréal, QC H3J 1N6
https://www.joebeef.ca/
Finally made it to Joe Beef. The key is to put yourself on the waiting list for a reservation as soon as you can and do it for every day you are in Montreal. And be prepared to change your plans! This place was worth the hype. Our server was very gracious and really felt like our hostess, and the food was exceptional.
(Strangely enough, I was not as enamored with their sister restaurant, Liverpool House, but that could be because we were sitting next to a really boorish guy that time.)

Belon
Horse tenderloin at Joe Beef
1101 Rue de Bleury
Montréal, QC H2Z 1N1
https://belon.ca/en/
Hip place for seafood. Get as much as you can handle from the raw bar, as they have some hard to get items that are very fresh. Also, check out their cheeky humor at the restrooms.

Kinton Ramen
Various locations
https://www.kintonramen.com/canada/
This is Matthew's favorite ramen. I expect when we say that college students live on ramen, Matthew's experience will be very different. He likes the days when they have karaage ramen on special.

Chocolate. Need I say more?
Maison Christian Faure
Two locations
https://maisonchristianfaure.ca/en/contact/
Incredibly indulgent and 'grammable desserts.

Montreal-style bagels
I am location-agnostic on this. I know locals have distinct loyalties to their bagel shops, but I'm not that nuanced yet. I even had one at the airport that I thought was great.

Other Things to do in Montreal
Notre-Dame Basilica
https://www.basiliquenotredame.ca/en
https://www.aurabasiliquemontreal.com/en/
Visit during the day and in the evening if you can, because Aura, their evening multimedia display, is worth it.
Notre-Dame Basilica during Aura

Montreal History and Archeology Museum
https://pacmusee.qc.ca/en/
I've been here four times and I still discover something new. Great multimedia displays to help you learn some history of Montreal.

Cirque du Soleil
https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/canada/montreal/shows
If you're in Montreal in June or July, check out the way that Cirque du Soleil was designed to be seen--under the big top, by the Old Port. If you've seen Cirque in Vegas, or in their traveling shows, you still must see a show at the "mother ship."

Montreal Amphi-Bus Tours
https://www.montreal-amphibus-tour.com/
Growing up in Wisconsin, these were the "Ducks" of Wisconsin Dells. The tour in Montreal is a great way to see a little of the city and get on the water if you are visiting in the summer.

Mount Royal
https://www.lemontroyal.qc.ca/en
The namesake of Montreal, it's worth a jaunt up to Mount Royal to check out the view and visit the big cross.

Montreal Jazz Festival
https://www.montrealjazzfest.com/en-CA
If you're in town at the end of June and beginning of July, the Jazz Festival is totally worth it. The acts on the free stages are incredible, and the ticketed shows are amazing too.

There are so many things I haven't done yet in Montreal, so I'm looking forward to more reasons to visit!

Favorite Places in Los Angeles

Pretty much all of our posts are triggered by questions from our friends. This post is inspired by Chad Barger of Productive Fundraising, a nonprofit consultant colleague, productivity nerd, and generally all-around good guy. Follow him on Twitter at @fundraiserchad!

So the greater LA area is BIG. I can't even assume to be an expert on this metro, as I have spent most of my time in Pasadena, Burbank and Orange County. But, here are my picks anyway:

Musso and Frank's Manny Aguirre
Musso and Frank Grill
6667 Hollywood Blvd
Hollywood, CA 90028
https://mussoandfrank.com/
Time to go old school. I have a soft spot for classic early 20th century style restaurants that still pride themselves on great cocktails, impeccable service, and traditional fine dining.

Din Tai Fung
Multiple locations in the Los Angeles area
https://dintaifungusa.com/locations_us/
I have not been to this location, but it is one of the ways that the Taiwanese are taking over the world. I've been to Din Tai Fung locations in Taiwan and Hong Kong. I love their pork and the crab and pork Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings).

Sashimi course at Hamasaku
Hamasaku
11043 Santa Monica Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90025
http://www.hamasakula.com/
Most good Asian restaurants in LA are in strip malls, it seems. While this place is a bit tricky for a first-timer to find, once inside, it's a little oasis. We had the omakase, and I was happy with almost all of the courses--the only critique I would provide is that I think there were too many heavier cooked dishes; I would have liked a little more balance in some lighter choices.

Counter at Pizzeria Mozza
Pizzeria Mozza
641 N Highland Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036
https://pizzeriamozza.com/
Is this place worth the hype? Yes, it is. Eat at the bar if you can. Not as crazy busy for a late lunch.

Other things we like that are not restaurants, theme parks or something related to movie or television production
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Disneyland and have had a blast at Universal Studios many times. But you have to do something else, right?

The Getty Museum
https://www.getty.edu/museum/
I've been to the Getty Center many times and I run out of time every visit. Amazing collection. I hope to check out the Villa sometime.

The Autry Museum of the American West
https://theautry.org/
I didn't think this would be my jam, but I enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed the Hollywood Western memorabilia.

I have several restaurants on my list to try, including but not limited to, of course:

Maybe it's time for a trip.

Favorite Places in Chicago

The Bean
Once again, I hear that a friend is going someplace, and that triggers a new post! This time, I can blame Kevin Heinonen, General Manager/Owner of Tinderbox Kitchen, the Annex Cocktail Lounge, and Tourist Home Urban Market. He's off to Chicago, so here are my favorites.

Topolobampo
445 N Clark St
Chicago, IL 60654
http://www.rickbayless.com/restaurants/topolobampo/
Rick Bayless' fine dining restaurant, this place serves Mexican food as we Americans never imagined it. Incredibly refined, subtle flavors and gorgeous presentation. I loved every course.

Gino's pizza
Gino's East
162 E Superior St
Chicago, IL 60611
http://www.ginoseast.com/
Iconic Chicago style pizza. There are many deep dish places to choose from, but this is my favorite. This was one of three stops for the GoalBusters Pizza Crawl, where we rented a stretch Hummer for 20 of our closest AFP friends and toured Gino's, the Signature Lounge at the top of the Hancock, and Lou Malnati's. Tons of fun.

View from the Lounge
Signature Lounge at the 96th
John Hancock Center
875 N. Michigan Ave
Chicago, IL 60611
https://www.signatureroom.com/lounge/
Beautiful views from the 96th floor of the Hancock Center. Keep this in mind when you gripe about the drink prices. Strangely enough, the ladies' room has one of the best panoramas of the city.

Like they said.
Billy Goat Tavern
430 N. Michigan Ave at Lower Level
Chicago, IL 60611
http://www.billygoattavern.com/
This is the original location. It's below street level, and not refined at all. That's why you go. Yes, you get a cheezborger and a beer. And chips.

Al's Italian Beef
Al's Italian Beef
Multiple locations throughout the Chicago area
http://www.alsbeef.com/
It's another fast food icon in the Chicago area, and has been on many travel shows. It really is a great sandwich.

Alinea
1723 N Halsted St
Chicago, IL 60614
https://www.alinearestaurant.com/
One of the many creative courses at Alinea, pre-reboot
Bucket list experience. Truly. Totally worth the hype. I went prior to the big reboot of the concept, so I can't directly testify to the experience now, but I'm sure it's still top notch. Make sure you've made a payment recently on your credit card so you can load it back up here.

Still haven't found my favorite hot dog place. Time to visit again.

Favorite Places in Amsterdam

It's early in the morning and I'm jet lagged, as I just got back from the International Fundraising Congress (IFC), produced by The Resource Alliance. This conference is held every October in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, just outside of Amsterdam, and is a gathering of thought leaders and innovators in the charitable/philanthropic/NGO sector. This was only my second trip to The Netherlands, but I've already developed a short list of "must do" places in Amsterdam. So here are a few of my picks, from a total newbie tourist perspective!

De Drie Fleshjes

I think this is my favorite bar in the world. This is the place for jenever and beer. Please don't come in fussing about Sauvignon Blanc. David (in the picture above) has been our bartender three of the four times we were here, and he remembered us by visit two! He was very helpful about guiding us through the multiple styles of jenever and the history of the bar. Go old school and have oude jenever and a Heineken. You also must drink the jenever properly, as shown here. This bar has been in operation since 1650, and holds claim to being the oldest bar in Amsterdam. While this place has been on many travel shows, it has never seemed crowded.

Restaurant Haesje Claes
http://www.haesjeclaes.nl/home/?lang=en
Spuistraat 273-275
1012 VR Amsterdam
Tel. +31 20 6249998

Open 7 days a week, 12:00 H-24.00 H (Last kitchen orders at 22.00 H)

This was one of my favorite meals of this trip. Lively atmosphere and appropriately old setting for a solid Dutch meal. We started with herring and jenever, which was a great pairing to cut through the oiliness of the fish. We then moved on to the eel soup, which tastes strongly of the mustard and the smokiness of the eel--it had more of a meaty taste than fish. We split the shrimp krokketen, and then had two generous entrees: the marrow peas and the sauerkraut stamppot. These are definitely winter weather foods! Heavy, but in a comfort food way. The staff is very friendly and helpful with the menu if you have questions. Natalia, our server, was fun to banter with! Great food, service, and a good value.

Cafe Loetje
https://cafeloetje.loetje.com/?lang=en
Johannes Vermeerstraat 52
1071 DT Amsterdam

Open 7 days a week from 10:00 a.m.
Kitchen is open until 10:30 p.m.

Another "light" lunch at this classic. Everyone on Yelp and Trip Advisor said to order one of the steaks. That was good advice. Their filets are prepared in butter, and you have your choice of just butter, the spicy version ("Bali") or the "de Roode Waard" version, which has onions, bacon, and chicken livers. We, of course, went all in, and ordered the "loaded" one, and it was delicious.

Kalfsvlees krokketen
FEBO
https://www.febo.nl/ (website is in Dutch only)
Multiple locations around The Netherlands, hours vary

These are old fashioned automats, and they serve fried nuggets of goodness. Krokketen are a big thing in The Netherlands: breaded, fried snacks with a meat and gravy filling. If you have exact change, usually 1.80-3 euros, you can get the snack from the vending machine. If you don't, that's okay, you can order at the counter and have your krokket made fresh.

Rijstafel
Sampurna
http://www.sampurna.com/
Singel 498
Amsterdam centrum
tel.:+31(0) 20 625 32 64

Open daily at 12:00

I've been hunting for rijstafel, the Indonesian "rice table," which is a collection of small dishes served family style. We've been to three restaurants so far, and this one is the best. There are many more restaurants serving rijstafel in Amsterdam, so I'm sure there are other great ones, but I like this one. Atmosphere is cozy and the service was good.

Cafe Bern
http://www.cafebern.com/home-english/
Nieuwmarkt 9
1011 JR  Amsterdam
telephone +31 20 622 00 34 (from 3:00 pm)
Open 7 days a week: 4:00 pm – 1:00 am
kitchen: 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm

One of the few places where I have no photos! This was a nice surprise in Nieuwmarket. They have a brief menu, but everyone is there for the fondue. The cheese fondue is decadently rich, as you would expect, but the surprise for me was the Steak Bern, which you cook at your table on a metal plate of Bearnaise sauce. So good. Mostly Dutch here, but they do have an English menu if you ask. Communal tables and a tight squeeze in this cafe, so don't bring a big bag!

Number 11: Bananas, bacon and chile with added cheese
Pancakes Amsterdam
http://www.pancakes.amsterdam/
Multiple locations, but we go to
Centraal
Prins Hendrikkade 48, 1012 AC Amsterdam
Phone: +31 (0)20 820 42 40

Open daily from 8:00 to 20:00

Dutch pancakes are very thin and can be simple: traditional ones are just cheese, or ham and cheese, or a little bit of fruit. But, in the name of excess, we start piling on the toppings! My favorite it number 11, with bananas, bacon, and chiles. I added grated Dutch cheese this time and it was fabulous. This is a "card only" establishment, but tips are accepted in cash. It's also first come, first served, which sometimes makes the queue awkward, because if there is a party of 6 next in line, they will wait until a table for 6 is open, even if they have several tables for two available. If you find yourself behind a large party, it doesn't hurt to step up to the front and ask about a smaller table.

Veal Tonnato
Restaurant Van Kerkwijk
http://www.caferestaurantvankerkwijk.nl/eng/where_when.html
Nes 41
1012 KC Amsterdam
+31 20 6203316

Open 11:00-1:00 daily

This is a charming little place near Dam Square with a spoken menu, so everything changes day to day. The servers are friendly and helpful, and the european style fare is a little bit lighter than the heavy Dutch food we spent most of the time eating.

I'm looking forward to adding to this list next year at IFC 2018!

In memoriam: Ed from Yuma

I found out this morning that my Yuma food mentor, Ed Davis, aka "Ed in Yuma," aka "Ed Dibble," passed away this weekend.

I first met Ed via Chowhound, back when it was a very simple, online foodie bulletin board. Yelp and Instagram didn't exist, so random people from around the world posted thoughts and suggestions about what and where to eat on this discussion group. Being new to Yuma in 2006, I figured I should check out the food scene, and the only person posting on a regular basis from Yuma was this guy, "Ed Dibble." I am embarrassed how long it took me to figure out the humor in his handle.

I followed Ed's posts religiously. If he suggested a place, I would try to find it. I didn't find them all, but most of the ones that he suggested (that are still around) are now long time favorites.

Since there was no way to direct message someone on Chowhound, I had to hint on posts a few times that I'd like to meet Ed someday. I thought maybe I'd just happen to run into him at some point. Since I work with KAWC, Yuma's public radio station, I'm not hard to find, and Ed started dropping hints on his posts that he knew who I was.

Then, during one on-air pledge drive, Ed actually came to the studio! AND I WAS ON THE AIR! NOOOO! I missed my chance!

Luckily, our mutual friend, Ellen, knew I was stalking him, and graciously set up dinner to connect us. We had a grand time meeting Ed and Tina, and I continued, after that, to stalk his food posts, through his blog.

I am truly sad that I never got to have dinner with Ed at his favorite Chinese restaurant, Yummy Yummy. And that I never got to cook for him to make him some of my favorites.

In his honor, here are my favorite Yuma restaurants that were originally from Ed's list. And I will make it a point on my next trip to try some new places and write about them.

I hope you're having a great banquet, wherever you are now, Ed. Godspeed, and bon appetit!

Coconut Curry Shrimp at River City Grill
River City Grill
600 W 3rd St Yuma, AZ
http://www.rivercitygrill.com/

One of the nicest restaurants in Yuma, and owner Nan Bain is a huge supporter of public radio, particularly our station, KAWC. We've been eating here since our first visit to Yuma and have really eaten everything on the menu. My favorites are the roasted red pepper and tomato bisque, the coconut curry shrimp, the tequila snapper, and the pistachio crusted salmon or chicken. They are also a great option if you need vegan or gluten free options.

Previous post for River City Grill here.

Tacos y Mariscos Juanita’s
SW Corner of S Avenue A & W 8th St Yuma, AZ 85364
https://www.yelp.com/biz/tacos-y-mariscos-juanitas-yuma
Juanita's Campechana

Juanita's has the very best seafood cocktail in Yuma. Hands down, end of conversation. I love the campechana, which is the "everything" seafood cocktail, including shrimp, scallops, oysters, octopus and squid, and sometimes conch, depending on the day. The broth that the seafood rests in is the most delicious part. Add a little hot sauce, and it's a perfect meal on a sunny, but not too hot, day. Juanita's is a semi-permanent taco truck--it has a sign, outdoor seating, and rest rooms, but the truck drives home at the end of the day. It's also only open during daylight hours, because there's no outside lighting, and hours vary during the summer months. It's helpful if you know a teeny bit of Spanish, although on the weekends, the young man who typically is there expediting orders and busing tables can help with translation if needed. Bring cash.

Cheese crisp at Los Manjares de Pepe II
Los Manjares de Pepe II (Foothills Location)
11274 S Fortuna Rd, YumaAZ 85367
https://www.yelp.com/biz/los-manjares-de-pepe-ii-yuma

I used to go to the original location on 8th Street every trip for the Pepe Special, a tomatillo stewed pork. I still love the Pepe Special, but now I get it at their Foothills location, because it's 1) closer to the station, and 2) a little better, I think. Located at the very end of a strip mall, around the corner from the main stretch of the mall, this tiny restaurant produces excellent Mexican food. I am a big fan of the carnitas dinner as well as the cheese crisp, which I think is the best in Yuma.

The Patio at Desert Hills Golf Course
1245 W Desert Hills Dr, YumaAZ 85365
http://www.patioyuma.com/

The restaurant at the Desert Hills Municipal Golf Course, worth the trip. The jalapeno margarita is incredible, and favorite starters are the chicharron, the bacon wrapped shrimp and the stuffed medjool dates. Ed's post is much more detailed than mine, with good pictures, since I can't find mine.

Thanks for some great meals, Ed.

Favorite Places in Flagstaff, Arizona

UPDATED 1/17/20: I'm on the road over 200 days a year, so in many respects, I'm a tourist in Flagstaff too! But even with that, I know a thing or two about Flagstaff, so here are my recommendations.

Here is also my Yelp collection for Flagstaff, which gets updated more often.

Restaurants
34 S. San Francisco
Flagstaff, AZ 86001
My (very out of date) review is here. They have three properties--Tinderbox Kitchen is a small, higher-end dining room, The Annex is a creative cocktail bar, and the Tourist Home Urban Market is a breakfast/lunch place. Owner Kevin Heinonen and his team are a very dedicated team!

107 N San Francisco St #2
Flagstaff, AZ 86001
Chefs Joe and Dara have created a lively little restaurant focusing on flavorful and beautifully plated tapas-like dishes.

16 N San Francisco St
Flagstaff, AZ 86001
A Latin American inspired menu with really good tostones (crispy, twice-fried plantains) and huevos con carne. I also like the jalapeno burger.

Karma Sushi
6 E Route 66
Flagstaff, AZ 86001
This is a higher-end sushi place, kind of Scottsdale meets Flagstaff. In addition to sushi, I go for the tonkotsu ramen.

1312 S Plaza Way
Flagstaff AZ 86001
This is more functional sushi--not much atmosphere, but solid food and service, easier parking and a bit cheaper. This is our family night sushi.

2308 E Route 66
Flagstaff AZ 86004
Neopolitan style pizza from a wood-burning oven and good pasta. John Conley, the chef-owner, is also an all-around great guy!

2320 N 4th St
Flagstaff AZ 86004
Great brisket and pulled pork, but in reality, I go for the tater tots. No, that's an exaggeration, but the tots are incredibly good.

112 E Route 66
Flagstaff AZ 86001
Go for the chilaquiles. Be prepared to wait in line.

And because I have space...
Attractions
1400 W Mars Hill Rd
Flagstaff AZ 86001
Where Pluto was discovered! Check out the restored Clark Telescope. Open both day and night--I suggest doing both if you have time. I adore this place, and it's not just because I used to work there. It speaks to my nerdiness.

Lots of activities here in the summer, and a great educational place to learn about native plants.

A good way to get a sense of the indigenous cultures of the region.

Arizona Snowbowl
I'm not a skier, but I do hit the Skyride in the summer. Ride the chair lift up Mount Humphries, but make sure to watch out for the effects of the altitude. As my son, Matthew, says, "Hydrate or die-drate!"

Out of town attractions
We have four national parks within easy driving distance: Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki and the Grand Canyon, of course. Get an Interagency Annual Pass and you'll get your money's worth right away. Instead of going to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, go east of Flagstaff and hit Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater one day, Wupatki on the next, and enter the Grand Canyon via Cameron, Arizona and the East Rim. Cameron is the home of the Cameron Trading Post, which has a lot of tchotchkes and a good Navajo Hot Beef.

Scenic railroad to the Canyon--worth doing at least once.

Sedona is also about 45 minutes away.

Favorite Places in New Orleans

Fried Chicken Platter at Emeril's
This blog is my friend Jaye's suggestion, although my colleague, Steve, is headed to NOLA later this month. New Orleans is one of those places that you must visit at least once. Here are my faves from many trips over the years!

Emeril's
800 Tchoupitoulas St., New Orleans, LA 70130
Truth be told, I was terrified that I would be disappointed with this place. So many times, you go to the celebrity chef places and the hype does not match the experience. With Emeril's, I was not disappointed. The location is beautiful, service stellar, and food fantastic.
Bone Marrow at R'evolution
August, 301 Tchoupitoulas St, New Orleans, LA 70130
Lunch buffet at Dooky Chase

Lüke, 333 St Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA 70130
Part of Chef John Besh's restaurant group, August is the more formal older sibling of Lüke, the louder, brighter bistro. Both provided excellent service and well executed dishes. At August, the foie gras three ways was delicious, and at Lüke, incredibly good fried oysters and raw bar.

930 Tchoupitoulas St, New Orleans, LA 70130
Great place to get small dishes to share, like cured meats, rabbit, crawfish pie, okra, and other down home Cajun cuisine in a modern, relaxed environment. They have a lot of local brews and truly strange cocktails. Do not try the beet juice cocktail. I don't know what I was thinking.

Restaurant R'evolution
777 Bienville St, New Orleans, LA 70130
Beautifully presented food, hip atmosphere and a more adventurous menu than most places in the French Quarter.

Dooky Chase
2301 Orleans Ave, New Orleans, LA 70119
Traditional soul food from the original celebrity chef of soul food. Mrs. Leah Chase visits the dining room regularly, and while we didn't get to talk with her, we did see her hovering during the lunch buffet. Darn good fried chicken.
209 Bourbon Street, New Orleans, LA 70130
Shrimp Gumbo at Lil Dizzy's, photo by Jim Anderson
I love this place and try to visit every time. It is classic, old school N'awlins fine dining. I love the souffled potatoes, turtle soup, and any of their fish or shrimp preparations. Guys must wear a jacket. Ask for the cafe brulot at the end of the meal.
1403 Washington Avenue New Orleans LA 70130
THE place for Sunday Jazz Brunch. It's an elegant, classic, well-deserved destination restaurant. Save room for the bread pudding.

Lil Dizzy's Cafe
1500 Esplanade Ave, New Orleans, LA 70116
Thrilled to find this locals' place: Sunday brunch here is delicious, inexpensive, and you really get a peek into local life.

Erin Rose, photo by Jim Anderson
811 Conti St, New Orleans, LA 70112
A great local bar where you meet REAL LOCALS! Incredibly good value on drinks, especially since you're only one block off of Bourbon Street, and not a single neon blended drink to be found. Once when we visited, we met retired twins from Tennessee heading to Texas for NASCAR and a local parish Justice of the Peace who sang Irish songs. So cool.

Cafe du Monde
800 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA 70116
This is the place where EVERYONE goes to get beignets and chicory coffee. It is a bit of a tourist trap, but that doesn't make the beignets any less tasty. Word of warning, do NOT wear black to this place. You will be dusted with powdered sugar, no matter how careful you are. Also, coffee refills are NOT FREE so be careful when the server asks you if you want a refill. And bring cash.
401 Poydras St, New Orleans, LA 70130
Classic New Orleans for jambalaya, etouffee, red beans and po'boys. Expect a line at lunch time--just get in line, belly up to the counter and order some down home comfort food. My first time, I got the oyster po'boy but really wanted the combo platter, which is what Jim had. Since then, I seem to repeat the po'boy, but Jim usually repeats the combo, so it's all good. Sharing is caring.

Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone
214 Royal Street, New Orleans, LA 70130
Yes, it's been on a bazillion travel shows, but it's still pretty cool. Hard to get a seat at the actual bar, though, so be patient.

923 Decatur St., New Orleans, LA 70116
Stop here to get a muffuletta to take on the plane. (PS: Steve, the hot sauce shop is next to Central Grocery.)

Favorite places in the Washington DC area

My friend, Laura, and earlier, my friend, Josh, both asked for recommendations for the DC area. I gave each of them a far too long list of suggestions for far too few meals!

In no particular order, my favorite places to eat and drink in the DC area:

Off the Record at the Hay-Adams Hotel
800 16th St NW, Washington, DC 20006
What happens at the Hay-Adams is Off the Record. Go for large classic cocktails and clubby atmosphere.

selection of courses from minibar by José Andrés
minibar and barmini by José Andrés
855 E Street NW, Washington, DC 20004
minibar is a bucket list restaurant. barmini is far more affordable to get a glimpse of what's going on at minibar. Go to barmini for a creative cocktail and some noshes; go to minibar for a once in a lifetime meal.

Jaleo Crystal City
Various tapas from Jaleo
2250-A Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA 22202
Another José Andrés concept, I prefer this location (and the Las Vegas Jaleo) to the other locations. I always order a jamon, the pan con tomate, and patatas bravas. Often I'll add in the pulpo, and maybe some liquid olives.

Hot n' Juicy Crawfish
2651 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20008
Yes, it's a chain, but I like it. You have to be family or practically family to eat with me here, though. It's not pretty, but it is delicious.
1309 5th St NE, Washington, DC 20002
Great collection of local food and product vendors, and fun to graze for a leisurely lunch.

Mitsitam Cafe at the National Museum of the American Indian
4th St & Independence Ave SW
Skip right on past the "American" food station of chicken strips and burgers and browse the several different food stations representing various regions of indigenous cultures. I usually get the sampler plate, which includes your choice of four different side dishes from any region you like.

Old Ebbitt Grill
675 15th St NW, Washington DC 20005
Near the White House, this classic restaurant was long the hang out of politicos for long lunches. I think almost everyone here is a tourist now, but it still has a good classic vibe. They are famous for the Oyster Riot in November, and their oyster happy hour from 3-6 pm.

NoPa Kitchen + Bar
Lobster Cake Soup at Sushi Taro
800 F Street, NW Washington, DC 20004
Hip place at the International Spy Museum, this is a good place for cocktails and appetizers after a day of exploring the Penn Quarter area.

Sushi Taro
1503 17th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036
A healthy, but not long walk from DuPont Circle, this restaurant serves a beautiful omakase dinner, a Japanese prix fixe option.

Russia House
1800 Connecticut Ave NW DC 20009
Great for happy hour and a overabundance of vodka choices. Caviar Mondays!

Hank's Oyster Bar
1026 King Street, Alexandria VA 22314
I'm usually at the Old Town Alexandria location, where the bartenders are skilled and the oyster selection is great.

Bistrot Royal
1201 N. Royal St., Alexandria, VA 22314
Charming little French restaurant near Old Town Alexandria with an affordable three course prix fixe menu every day.

La Fromagerie
Cheese and charcuterie with wine flight at La Fromagerie
1222 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314
Was not disappointed when I asked the staff to select cheese, meat and a wine flight for me.

Haute Dog and Fries
610 Montgomery Street, Alexandria, VA 22314
Any of their creative signature dogs are great, and they make an amazing lobster roll. There's also craft beer and milkshakes. What's not to love?

Food Trucks near L'Enfant Plaza Metro on Maryland Avenue SW
There are always a bunch of food trucks along this stretch on weekdays, and often on weekends too. Great for when you're hungry after exploring the nearby Smithsonian museums.

Zaytinya
701 9th Street NW, Washington DC 20001
Yeah, another José Andrés restaurant. I have a foodie crush on José. It doesn't help that I once hosted the national pledge event for his now ended PBS series, Made in Spain. He was a charming in real life as he is on television. Jim Anderson and I had a great meal of Mediterranean mezze (small plates) here that is documented here. We've since been back several times and it's always lively and great.

Enjoy!

Favorite Haunts in Yuma, Arizona

Seeing Ed in Yuma (a.k.a. Ed Dibble) yesterday reminded me that I have not posted about Yuma in a long time. My business partner, Jim Anderson, and I have been traveling to Yuma for over ten years, and we definitely have places that we must visit when we are in town. So here's the list!

Tacos Mi Rancho (aka Tacos Mi Ranchito)
188 South 4th Avenue Yuma, AZ
Tacos at Tacos Mi Rancho
https://www.yelp.com/biz/tacos-mi-rancho-yuma

I love this place. I have difficulty eating tacos anywhere else. I would love to comment on the whole menu, but to be honest, I always order a Carnitas taco on corn tortillas and then one or two other a la carte items. I've had pretty much every taco on the menu, and they are all good, and inexpensive. I've also had the chile relleno, which is okay, but I prefer ones at other restaurants. I've also had their seafood cocktail, which is fine, but I prefer the ones at Juanita's food truck. It's really just about tacos, beer, chips and salsa for me here, and I love them for it. It's not a trip to Yuma for me without a stop to see the ladies at Tacos Mi Rancho!

CLOSED: Gone but not forgotten: Jack and Rosie's Steakhouse
1551 W 5th St, YumaAZ 85364
https://www.yelp.com/biz/jack-and-rosies-steakhouse-yuma

This is old school. Do NOT go here for a fancy steakhouse, or for high end atmosphere. Come here for huge traditional cocktails (nothing in a blender, please), a big steak, and a 1960's small town supper club vibe. I usually get a very large manhattan (up, in a large martini glass), and a ribeye medium rare or the fried chicken livers. Soup of the day, a piece of garlic bread and a simple iceberg salad are included. The house dressing is a french blue cheese dressing; you can get other dressings, but why? I realized as I wrote this that I don't have any decent photos from Jack and Rosie's, because it's dark and the food is pretty simply plated. Good excuse for a return visit next time, not that I need one. There are some reviewers on Yelp that clearly do not appreciate the vibe of this place--just pop more money in the jukebox and ignore the haters while you eat your perfect steak.

Those were the old standby's. Now for some newcomers to our list:

The Patio at Desert Hills Golf Course
1245 W Desert Hills Dr, YumaAZ 85365
http://www.patioyuma.com/

A new iteration of the restaurant at the Desert Hills Municipal Golf Course, this time the food is good! (I know I have photos somewhere, but I can't find them.) The jalapeno margarita is incredible, and favorite starters are the chicharron, the bacon wrapped shrimp and the stuffed medjool dates. I haven't eaten an entree here yet, because Jim and I usually get a collection of apps!

Ed's post is much more detailed than mine.

Sooo Cali Dog from the Dog Haus
Dog Haus
1651 S 4th Ave, YumaAZ 85364
http://www.doghaus.com/

The only chain on my list, and a newcomer to Yuma. Came here at the suggestion of a couple people at work, including Travis, whom we trust has good taste. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of sausages available and the creative toppings. The Sooo Cali dog has arugula, spicy basil aioli, crispy onions, avocado, and tomato, and was delicious, if not tidy. Also, they have tater tots, which make almost everything better, and bacon, which definitely makes everything better.

By the way, check out Ed's blog. He's my go-to source for new places in Yuma.
